Benefits & Treatment Details Of Red-Light Therapy
Red light therapy (RLT), also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses low-level wavelengths of red light (620-750nm) and near-infrared light (750-1400 nm) to stimulate and optimize cellular function.
Mechanism – (Basic) RLT penetrates the skin 1-3 inches deep, targeting mitochondria to increase ATP production, boost nitric oxide (NO) levels, improve blood flow, and enhance cellular function. Results may vary by individual; consultation with your doctor is recommended. Sessions 10-20 minutes X 3-5 days/week X 4-6 weeks to see results.
(Detailed) Red & Near-Infrared light binds to the Cytochrome C oxidase (CCO), a key enzyme in the mitochondria to produce energy. In inflamed or aging cells, Nitric Oxide (NO) binds to the CCO and blocks the binding site for oxygen >> reduces ATP (energy) production + increases the presence of free radical causing inflammation. ♥ RLT Therapy kicks off the NO, freeing the site for oxygen, thereby restoring the ATP production, reduces free radicals. ♥ RLT modulates Cytokine production- shifting the balance from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory which promotes healing. Cytokines (Interleukins, Interferons, TNF, Growth Factors) are small proteins that help the cells communicate with each other. It reduces Pro-inflammatory Cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β), Increases anti-inflammatory Cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β), Increases Growth factors (VEGF, BDNF, NGF, FGF) leading to many of the benefits.
-
VEGF: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor
-
BDNF: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor
-
NGF: Nerve Growth Factor
-
TNF α: Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha
-
FGF: Fibroblast Growth Factor
-
Cytokines: cell messaging proteins
Preparation – Showering is required. Light lotion or body oil is fine. Undergarments must be kept during the entire treatment. Additional clothes must be removed for the best benefit.
Sessions and Duration – 16-24 inches away for Cosmetic Skin Treatment and 10-14 inches away for Deep Tissue/Joint/Bone benefits with 10–20-minute sessions about 3-5 times per week. At least 4-6 weeks of treatment is recommended to see a significant response.
Safety Profile – RLT has a strong safety profile with minimal serious adverse events reported. It involves zero UV exposure, zero heat damage, and zero downtime. Not recommended in pregnancy. RLT does not emit dangerous EMF (Electromagnetic Field). Pre-existing areas of hyperpigmentation can worsen, so it is best to avoid those or use RED array on those areas. Never stare into the LEDs – Protective Eye goggles are provided.
Conditions and Diseases that Benefit with RLT:
- Skin Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging: RLT stimulates collagen and elastin production, reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and signs of aging while improving skin elasticity, tone, and texture. Works on all Fitzpatrick skin types.
- Acne and Scar Treatment: Helps treat acne, reduce redness, scars, dark spots, and blemishes, leading to smoother and clearer skin. A combination of 630 nm red and 415 nm blue light achieved up to 77% lesion reduction in 8 weeks.
- Wound Healing and Tissue Repair: Accelerates wound healing, supports tissue regeneration, and improves blood circulation.
- Reduced Inflammation: Decreases inflammation in the body and skin without damaging cells, aiding various inflammatory conditions (RA, Psoriatic Arthritis).
- Pain Relief: Provides relief from chronic pain by enhancing mitochondrial function and reducing inflammation, supporting muscle recovery. For conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, and TMJ.
- Muscle Recovery and Performance: Aids in muscle repair, reduce soreness, and may enhance athletic performance through cellular regeneration. NFL & NBA teams now mandate pre/post-game RLT. Sprinters: ↓ creatine-kinase 39 % drop (marker of muscle damage).
- Hair Regrowth: Stimulates hair follicles, encourages regrowth, and may minimize hair loss by improving scalp health.
- Improved Cognitive Function: May enhance brain function, memory, and thinking abilities, offering potential benefits for mental clarity.
- Dementia: Provides neuroprotection, may slow down cognitive decline, improve daily activities, and reduce symptoms like wandering, sundowning, and falls in patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Transcranial light may increase cerebral blood flow. Zero side effects vs every Alzheimer’s drug on the market
- Better Sleep Quality: Improves sleep patterns and increases daytime alertness.
- Mood Enhancement and Reduced Anxiety: Can improve mood, reduce anxiety, boost energy levels, and decrease agitation.
- Psoriasis Treatment: Clears psoriasis faster than topicals.
- Osteopenia and Osteoporosis: Enhances bone density, stimulates osteoblast activity, promotes bone regeneration, increases bone growth factors, and improves blood flow, potentially reducing fracture risk, without side effects like traditional meds.
- Improves Testosterone levels/ ED: Enhances overall blood flow and nutrient delivery to tissues, supporting healing and cellular function.
